    IIPM going global
    Common ground across continents
    By Kester Eddy
    Published: October 16 2006

Siddharth Nambiar, of the Indian Institute of Planning and Management in Bangalore, India, used to give little thought to business schools in the former communist Europe.

At least, not until he attended a conference in Paris this year. There, Prof Nambiar, as head of IIPM's global outreach programme, found himself at a round-table discussion listening to Danica Purg, president of the Central and East European Management Development Association (Ceeman), and nodding in agreement.

The two were soon enthusiastically comparing notes on various aspects of management education.

Prof Purg, dean of IEDC Bled School of Management, based in Bled, Slovenia, set up Ceeman in 1993 to address the particular needs of business schools in the former communist countries, which were then all in the early stages of transition to free market democracies.

On discovering that his Bangalore school, in spite of its vastly different heritage, had much in common with schools in Prague and St Petersburg, it seemed a natural move to Prof Nambiar for IIPM to apply for Ceeman membership.

"Ceeman represents business schools from a partof the world going through rapid economic growth and the resulting enormous changes," says Prof Nambiar. "India is goingthrough much the same process. Thus Ceeman's vision, created for business schools which are a part of that change, is applicable to us as well."

IIPM is the first member from India to join Ceeman, but it is only one of a growing number of schools and institutions from outside the association's traditional core area that are signing up.

"Many schools in developing economies face challenges similar to those we face, and they appreciate Ceeman's efforts to find solutions. Ceeman is moving away from being a regional-based to an issue-based association," says Milenko Gudic, Ceeman director of research.

The result is that today, 37 of the association's 101 school members now hail from beyond central and eastern Europe, including institutions from as far afield as Mexico, North America and even Australia.

Prof Gudic has also found that the way Ceeman tackles issues - whether it be faculty development, accreditation or even the management of schools themselves - attracts universal interest.

Hence the association had immediate appeal to Sabanci University's Faculty of Management, Istanbul, Turkey, which only started classes in 1999, says Nakiye Boyacigiller, the school's dean.

"Just look at Ceeman's activities - educating educators, strengthening managerial and leadership capabilities in business schools, [promoting] international research and case writing. We believe these activities and goals are important for all schools, especially young ones," says Prof Boyacigiller.

Ceeman also offers excellent access to a region that is often overlooked by international business schools, says Chin Tiong Tan, provost and deputy president of Singapore Management University. "We believe we can learn more about the region by getting our faculty involved there. I anticipate stronger economic relationships between Asia and central and eastern Europe," says Prof Tan.

He is also a believer in broadening his school's outlook. "Our faculty can't be global if they only restrict their learning and research to Asia and the developed world. We encourage diversity," he says.

These efforts to establish ties to the region have already born fruit, with a contingent of Russians, including a minister, businessmen and academics, visiting Singapore Management University as a direct result of attending last year's Ceeman annual conference.

Nor is it only schools from exotic, developing countries that find value in the tiny Bled-based association.

"Ceeman is an excellent forum through which to understand the issues in the region. Personally, I've been keeping track since 1989 and it is terrific to see growth and development," says Kai Peters, chief executive of Ashridge management school in the UK.

He finds Ceeman programmes, though designed to develop schools in the former communist bloc, are still of value to Ashridge. More value, in fact, than expensively hobnobbing with some of the great and the good in the US.

"There is very little that is not applicable [in Ceeman programmes]. Issues concerning the strategy and market positioning of schools is relevant world-wide.

"Interestingly, there is more commonality with schools that have 'to earn their living' than I feel with schools that have endowments of billions of dollars which I meet when in the US," Prof Peters says.

And while he believesthat established schools have a "moral obligation" to contribute to the development of business and business school communities around the world, the bottom line is that there is a real business imperative for Ashridge in Ceeman membership.

"We have worked and are working on projects which have come through the broad Ceeman network. Understanding the market and building brand among colleague schools leads to business," Prof Peters says.

    DARK
    SPO(R)T!!

A ‘big gun lover, a candle in the wind/ I’m going down in a blaze so gory, molten kidneys... end of story!’ Bon Jovi’s rock poetry, tweaked with a pinch of testosterone could well have been a one-note-fits-all anthem, swan song and requiem for ambitious young men (and women) who oft en mortgage their lives in a desperate dash for athletic immortality. It is unfortunate that the fall of crumbling icons like Floyd Landis, Justin Gatlin and now Marion Jones does not go beyond underscoring the ethical challenges where our sporting champions meet their Waterloo. Both budding athletes and their mentors need to realise that performance enhancing drugs (PEDs) like Stanozolol ravage more than the mere spirit of the sport and the sportsman.

For instance, bodybuilding, once the pursuit of an artistic ideal has become a world beset by a series of chemically engineered, anabolic ally deranged freaks where ‘juicing up’ is par for the course. But beyond the gloss and glamour of the oil and the arc lights is a growing realisation that maybe the gain isn’t worth
the pain. Names of fallen giants like Mohammed Benaziza and Andreas Munzer might’ve been brushed away but when half a generation of once-titanic champions was left battling organ failure and worse, the media went to town with quotes and confessions that put the drugs in the dock.

When names like Tom Prince, Don Long and Mike Matarazzo, having barely managed to clamber up the ledge overlooking the final abyss, confess to their chemical seduction and the ensuing physiological sedition, condemning their own past association with steroids and encouraging fans and enthusiasts to ‘go natural’, it’s time that other sports took a leaf out of bodybuilding’s new found honesty and went beyond stopping at the customary cry of ‘shame’. As sporting personalities strive to be the best in the world, the association of sports-with-good-health is increasingly finding itself on slippery ground.

All thanks to steroids and other performance enhancing drugs, for fast isn’t fast enough and neither is big, big enough. From sprinters to strength athletes to cyclists, steroids have changed the very core and character of these hitherto healthful pursuits. But what makes them reach for the PEDs? Agreed, there is fame and glory at the top, but at what cost? Isn’t life too steep a price to pay for such ephemeral glory? Having survived a double kidney failure at 34, Tom Prince said “It means in all likelihood my kidneys will give out early... (and) I will probably die young…” So, if trends are any indication of where our ignoble knights of sports are headed, the answer probably is – to the grave... and soon!!

The case against steroids is two-fold. Firstly, there are health risks, and secondly, those who don’t try them are forced to choose between cheating and losing and thus the vicious circle. The spirit of sportsmanship that earns honour in victory is a virtue no longer sought. Unmindful of the tragedies, there seems to be no dearth of people embracing PEDs. In this deadly game within a sport, there are no winners, only losers who choose to remain oblivious to the fact that their bodies are ticking time-bombs. One never knows when it’s going off and when one does, it might just be too late!!

    IIPM Academics > Curriculum

    "Winners All The Way ! ! ! IIPM's Full time & Integrated programs in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship are in a different league. Students are exposed to case studies & industry projects apart from undertaking tours to countries in Europe & US under the GOTA program, providing entrepreneurial outlooks to students..." {Source: The Times of India, June 2002}

    "IIPM's initiatives exposes students to international management practices of global organizations... IIPM's alliance with IMI, one of the top three business schools enables IIPM students to get joint globally recognized certification..." {Source: Financial Express, June 2002}

    "What makes IIPM programs different? The focus of the Full time & Integrated programs is National Economic Planning... The students visited organizations like Nestle in Vevey, Switzerland, Federation of Swiss Watch Industry (Bienne), Sulzer (Winterthur), IMD Lausanne etc. This international exposure not only broadens the students' horizons, but also brings them at communication terms with global management professionals..." {Source: Hindu, May 2002}

The integrated and full time programme in national economic planning and entrepreneurship provided by IIPM (which are superior to standard MBA and BBA programs), alongwith IIPM's Fellowship, Executive Education (and Global Opportunities and Threats Analysis programs where students visit organizations like the United Nations (Geneva), World Bank, ILO, Nestle S.A. Vevey, IMD Lausanne, Credit Suisse etc.) have created some of the highest standards in the management field.

Full time Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship (leading to the award of the MBA degree from IMI): This is the renowned two year full time Master's residential program that leads to the award of the MBA degree from the International Management Institute, Belgium, one of the Europe's leading business schools. Offered currently at the Asian (New Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Bangalore, Chennai, Ahmedabad & Hyderabad) campuses of IIPM, students have the option of transferring their credits to IMI Belgium and continuing their studies there. Students study core subjects in the first year related to various areas like National Economic Planning, Marketing, Personnel & Industrial Relations, Finance & Accounting, Production, Quantitative Techniques, IT Systems and various other term papers. In the second year, students have to undertake compulsory specializations related to Marketing & IT. Apart from these two compulsory specializations, students have a choice of taking up an additional specialization, namely Finance or Human Resources. Students in the second year also study advanced core papers like Business Policy & Strategic Planning, Mergers & Acquisitions, International Marketing etc. Students have to submit a thesis dissertation at the end of the program. Interestingly, this IIPM program has been rated as covering at least 33% more credits than any other MBA course in the world. Visit the link on Faculty to view the intellectual strength behind the Full time Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship courses and the subjects covered. Students join the best companies in the world after passing out from this course. Please visit the link on campus placements for more information. Also visit the link on application details for information on how to apply.

Integrated Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship (leading to the award of the BBA degree from IMI): The Bachelor's program at IIPM is ranked amongst the best programs for undergraduates in India. This is a three year full time residential program that leads to the award of the BBA degree from the International Management Institute, Belgium, one of the Europe's leading business schools. As mentioned previously, the Bachelor's program is currently offered at IIPM's Asian campuses in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Chennai, Pune, Ahmedabad & Hyderabad. In this IIPM program, in the first year, the IIPM students have to study the foundation courses related to areas like Marketing, HR, Finance, Foreign Languages, Culture, Executive Communication, Quantitative Techniques, General Awareness, History & Literature, Introduction to Management, Introduction to IT systems. In the 2nd year, students have to undertake core subjects related to various areas like National Economic Planning, Marketing, Personnel & Industrial Relations, Finance & Accounting, Production, Quantitative Techniques, IT Systems and various other term papers. In the third year, students have to undertake compulsory specializations related to Marketing & IT. Apart from these two compulsory specializations, students have a choice of taking up an additional specialization, namely Finance or Human Resources. Students in the third year also study advanced core papers like Business Policy & Strategic Planning, Mergers & Acquisitions, International Marketing etc. Students have to submit a thesis dissertation at the end of the program. The IIPM integrated program is unique in the aspect that students in the final two years undergo as rigorous a course schedule as in the Full time program. Most importantly, these IIPM under graduate students, after working for two years in the industry, are automatically awarded the MBA degree from IMI. This allows the Integrated students to achieve an industry standing that is comparable to MBA graduates, at the same time allowing a time saving of two years. Visit the link on Faculty to appreciate the top notch faculty teaching at the under graduate programme and the subjects being covered. Another important aspect of this program is that students have the option of transferring their credits to IMI Belgium and continuing their studies at IMI. Students join the best companies in the world after passing out from this course. Kindly visit the link on campus placements for more information. Also visit the link on application details for information on how to apply.

European Exchange Program with IMI: Considered one of the most valuable learning experiences at IIPM, all students of IIPM who successfully complete the first year of their programme at IIPM in India are eligible to go to IMI for the duration of one trimester in the second year. The students would stay & study at the Antwerp Campus of IMI in Belgium. The students would get the opportunity to interact with international faculty as IMI faculty includes various American, European & Asian professors. Students would be in the midst of truly multi-national student groups as IMI students belong to various parts of the world. During the course of this study, the students would be taken on corporate & academic tours to Brussels (Belgium), Paris (France) & Bruges (Belgium). This would provide the most invaluable opportunity of understanding how global organizations work.

    About IIPM > The Director
(As described by Professor Shubhoshekhar Bhattacharjee, Worldwide Head, Asia Development Intelligence Unit, and Faculty at IIPM, through his various interactions & talks with Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri)

    IIPM-Bangalore ! IIPM-Chennai ! IIPM-New Delhi ! IIPM-Mumbai ! IIPM-Pune ! IIPM-Hyderabad ! IIPM-Ahemdabad

"What does a rich country mean? Does it mean a country where a majority of people live above the poverty line? Or a country where even though many might die of hunger, the per capita GDP is high?"

"Would you say that India needs strengthening of the current democratic parliament for proper planned growth, or does India in reality need a government like that of China that borders on dictating changes required for coordinated economic development?"

No, these are not just any economic quiz trivia! These are, in fact, real examples of a question-answer session from a class on Comparative Planning conducted by Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri that I attended as a student at The Indian Institute of Planning & Management.

It would take umpteen number of interactions to really understand the expanse of knowledge that lies beneath that serious disposition. Knowledge that comes with a frustrating desperation at the slow or negative pace of improvement of human life in India and of India 's economic growth! Meet Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri, Professor of Comparative Planning at IIPM, who is known amongst international economists & his inspired students for his mind moving development models, some of the most innovative country comparison economic meters, and most importantly, irrefutable logic while analyzing situations. If these are what make interacting with Dr. Chaudhuri so lively, they also set him miles ahead from the rest of the breed of 'economists'.

"Rather than attempting to ape China and equal its national income, India should own up to its deficiencies and try to now reach the economic levels of probably a country like Malaysia," says Dr. Chaudhuri, a Ph.D & D.Sc holder from Berlin School of Economics, Germany, "Because I believe that with its present policies, India can never reach anywhere near China, even in the next 100 years..."

Born in a small city of Assam , an eastern state of India , Dr. Chaudhuri was always focused on education as a stepping stone for knowledge. Recalling the days while completing B. Sc from Presidency College in Calcutta ("We had a very visionary system of teaching"), the former IIM Bangalore & XLRI Jamshedpur professor also recommends that the reason for existence of every individual should be to support survival of the weakest, rather than survival of the fittest.

Quoting from his own example - he went through a very different experience while working with HLL (Unilever Group) as the Chief Economic Advisor in the initial years after completing the D.Sc from Berlin - Dr. Chaudhuri says that he decided to start IIPM because this was "an institution that could truly contribute to educating the management graduates of today that economic growth could occur only by coordinated & planned efforts between the government owned public sector and the private enterprises". In fact, during the time Dr. Chaudhuri founded the management courses department at IMT Ghaziabad, his experiences while interacting with the Indian Government's bureaucratic processes further strengthened his resolve to develop a totally government independent institution that could function without political prejudices.

Dr. Chaudhuri is credited with formulating the concept of Life Style Parity that is different from the concept of Purchasing Power Parity and looks at how two individuals living in different countries need not purchase the same items to get an equal level of satisfaction. His endeavours in developing the rural belts of India have developed into the most famous and massive Manav Vikas Kendras (Human Development Centers). With more than a hundred such centers running in various rural belts of India , Dr. Chaudhuri has provided a stepping stone to future promises like the Great Indian Dream Foundation.

Even with so many achievements behind him (though he modestly gives all the credit of his success to the people around him), Dr. Chaudhuri says that it's the future that holds greater accomplishments and promises. And in his own words, "If by giving away everything, I could rid India of its various misdemeanors, I would be privileged to give away everything many times over".

With the least surprise then that most of his students want to join him back in his various programs for national economic development, I hope and believe that what Dr. Chaudhuri has set out to achieve, would be obtained sooner than later...

IIPM Students Life > Campus Events

The gamut of events is what keeps the freshness of IIPM alive. Active minds and hearts is what this institute treasures and endeavours for. The mega events such as Aagman and Amaze break the age old tradition of celebrations. In other words there events redefine the very essence of post graduate studies. Moreover these events tend to dig, even the ‘slightest of talent possible’ out of an individual and make him/her feel enthralled and on top of the world.

IIPM Students Life > Campus Resources

In terms of infrastructure, campus and technology support, IIPM is rated amongst the top institutes of the country. IIPM's academic campuses in Asia are based in New Delhi, the capital of India, Mumbai (the financial capital of India and one of the main industrial hubs of Asia), Chennai (the industrial capital of India), Bangalore (IT capital of India), Pune (academic capital of India), Hyderabad (technology city) and Ahmedabad. IIPM's Asian consulting and research centers, under IIPM's Consulting Cell (Planman Consulting) are based in New Delhi, Mumbai, Bangalore, Kolkata, Chennai (India), and the North American consulting and research center is based in Toronto (Canada). Chicago (USA) is the headquarters for the most resent research and consulting center that IIPM is setting up in North America. In the European continent, along with strategic partners International Management Institute (IMI) Belgium, IIPM is in the middle of the industrial capitals of Europe, namely Antwerp & Brussels. Further, the Global Opportunities & Threats Analysis (GOTA) programs of IIPM shift traditional campus learning to the live corporate arena by visiting organizations like Nestle S.A (Vevey, Switzerland), United Nations (Geneva), World Bank, ILO, Credit Suisse Europe, IMD Lausanne, etc.

IIPM's Asian campuses focus on various academic programs, namely, Full time & Integrated Programs in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship, Fellowship programs and on specific management training programs. In New Delhi, IIPM has the largest campus of all business schools. The IIPM Tower in Qutab Institutional Area is situated in one of the most prestigious institutional areas in South Asia. The area also has campuses of various international organizations like USAID, DFID (U.K), UN, ABB, and Ernst & Young. In Mumbai, the IIPM Tower in Bandra (West) has received many rave reviews in business magazines and news reports as being a designer's marvel and an architectural delight. As consistent with all of IIPM's international locations, the Mumbai campus is situated in one of the most highly valued locations in Asia. IIPM additionally also has another pristine campus spread across various acres of lush green landscape in South Delhi. This campus is exceptional because of the Scottish flavor of the ambience. The castle type buildings, mysteriously located between lush green landscapes and thick woods, provide the ideal setting for academic pursuits. A similarly huge and lush campus, focused now completely on rural development programs, is based in Gurgaon, adjacent to New Delhi. Interestingly, it was the Gurgaon campus where IIPM started its management programs in 1973.

All IIPM campuses have created standards in infrastructure, co-curricular, and extra curricular support. For example, students and participants, for their various projects and extra curricular activities, would regularly utilize services of air-conditioned auditoriums with seating capacities of over 1000, conference rooms with availability round the clock, computer laboratories with 24 hours online support, libraries extending across complete floors with some of the world's leading titles, classroom teaching infrastructure comparable to the most advanced in the world, sports facilities (Billiards, Swimming, Golf, Lawn Tennis, Table Tennis, Badminton, Cricket), and yes, the inimitable Canteen. World's leading organizations have provided, or currently support & maintain these high levels of infrastructure. Some of them are Microsoft, LG, Nestle, Hewlett Packard, Canon etc.

Whether for academic programs or for management training sessions across all its campuses, IIPM provides hostel accommodation for students and participants from various parts of the world. This adds phenomenally to group learning experiences, sustained by round the clock faculty interaction.

    IIPM-Best B-School

In the mid 1960s, a proposal to set up an Institute under the name of "Institute for Planning and Administration of National Economy" was forwarded to Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, Prime Minister of India and Chairman, Planning Commission, Government of India. A study tour was undertaken under Dr. M. K. Chaudhuri's commission during 1964-65 to acquire first hand knowledge about the working of similar institutions in Europe. A working paper on Regional Planning was circulated under the name of "Indian Institute of Planning" in 1969.

After resigning from Professorship at IIM (Indian Institute of Management) Bangalore, and after having been a Professor at XLRI Jamshedpur, Dr. Chaudhuri took over as Research Professor and founder Director of IIPM in 1973. Incidentally, Dr. Chaudhuri has also been the founder director of management courses at IMT Ghaziabad. At IIPM, the first residential full-time Post-Graduate Diploma Programme commenced on 12th August 1974, with students selected through admission tests and interviews held in New Delhi, Calcutta, Bombay & Bangalore. IIPM pioneered the all India admission procedure by holding admission tests and interviews in 15 centers, namely, Ahmedabad, Bangalore, Bhopal, Bhubaneshwar, Mumbai (Bombay), Kolkata (Calcutta), Chandigarh, New Delhi, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Jaipur, Lucknow, Chennai, Patna & Trivandrum. The institute has, through the experiences of the past decades, accumulated a vast and massive base of knowledge and learning. Further, the Global Opportunities & Threats Analysis (GOTA) programs of IIPM shift traditional campus learning to the live corporate arena where students visit organizations like Nestle S.A (Vevey, Switzerland), United Nations (Geneva), World Bank, ILO, Credit Suisse Europe, IMD Lausanne, etc.

IIPM's Asian campuses focus on various academic programs, namely, Full time and Integrated Programme in National Economic Planning and Entrepreneurship, Fellowship programs and on specific management training programs.

This adds phenomenally to group learning experiences, sustained by round the clock
    faculty interaction.
